4-10 A Black Love History Lesson

I love my grandparents’ love story because it represents so many positive things that have shaped my life.  What I’m sharing isn’t being told in chronological order, but the sentiments remain. Today is such a good day and here’s why.

Their love story is the point of Liberation for my grandmother.  He met her while she was working as a domestic and he was a returned war vet with benefits and a government job.  The Wolfe family was cool, but Buford saw bigger things for Margaret. My grandmother was at a point in her life, as the baby of a huge religious family, with ambitions outside of being a first lady like her mother. She lived life on her terms and when the consequences followed she stood firm and found a way. While my grandmother loved her family she was still the rebel in the eyes of the church (read community) founded by her grandfather.

My grandparents’ love story represents what a real team looks like.  My grandmother got her allowance from my grandfather and flipped it until they had enough to buy a house (Coupons, sewing, cooking everything, saving). That’s why I’ll die twice before I ever agree to sell the family home. They made moves when the moves weren’t even there. They found a home that would fit their family in what was once a Jewish neighborhood not far from where my grandmother once worked. He got her out of their house and put her in her own in the same neighborhood.  Now I don’t know if they said flex in the 1950s, but that’s what took place.

Lastly, it represents deep love. My grandfather couldn’t wait to be her husband so bad he forgot it was his birthday.  They put on clothes they already owned and went down to the courthouse.  Now they were cute still because my grandmother could sew and never held back her opinion on timeless fashion so she got them together. By the time they walked out it wasn’t until my grandfather took another read of the certificate that he noticed the date. Now if you pay attention to the timeline in the current day, how these Aries sign people mean business about their birthdays, you’ll feel how distracted he must have been.  That’s some serious excitement, and anyone would be lucky to have someone love them that much.

I’m lucky that they both existed and that other things that could have been the story of the start weren’t even a factor. My grandpa is the one who asked for me to even exist,  my parents were still trying to be cute and have fun in the Reagan Era. He manifested me via requests to the married couple that was out on the scene. My parents were an Instagram fashion couple before that was even a thing, a baby put a wrinkle in the program. However, my grandpa signed up to be the free Nanny. He taught me how to read, count money, catch the bus, and use the library. All those lessons be hitting til this day. He is also my first haircut client, but I feel like I’ve told that story already.

April 10th will always get extra energy from me.  Because 101 years ago God sent a guy named Buford to this world and everywhere he touched he brought freedom. Whether it was Germany in WWII, the daughter of a preacher from Alabama, or a little girl who wanted to know everything about everything.  I’m never skipping honoring this day.

Happy Heavenly Birthaversary!
